- Just been introduced to basis of the preliminary task so researched the key terms in which we had to include in our task and then as a group we thought about some of the ideas we could possibly create for our preliminary task. Following this we created a story board to run alongside our preliminary task, containing the settings, timings, shots/angles and Mise en Scene.
- Started filming our shots/scenes for the preliminary task, hadn't completed our shots yet therefore, we will have to continue this into our next lesson. Also completed some theory on 'Tordorv's Narrative Theory', 'Laura Mulvey - The Male Gaze' and 'Stuart Hall - Reception Theory' in the second half of the lesson and from the knowledge I gained, I created a detailed blog post on all of the theories and when necessary I will be able to go back and revise these theories.
- Completed the finishing shots for our preliminary task and uploaded them on to the editing software ready to edit and create our final piece. I was also new to using this software, therefore, I checked out some of the editing tools and played around for a while before getting started on the final product.
- In this lesson we were given a list of things that had to be finished and completed by a specific date so we were allowed a catch up lesson meaning I was able to improve on feedback and upload some work that I wasn't able to yet upload. Once I was up to date we were able to shortly discuss the next task in which we were given, this was to re-create the opening to 'Juno' shot by shot so we watched the opening and followed this on to next lesson.
- Due to it being mock week we done an hours long mock exam on genre signifiers, this allowed our teacher to see how well we were doing on the theory side of our lessons. The results from this lesson would then be put on our report showing our progress towards are targeted grades.
- In our other lesson we created a shot by shot storyboard for the opening of 'Juno' after each of the shots we would write what was happening within the shot, the shot itself, the timings, transitions and the music being played in the background. Although this was a long process it would allow us to recreate our own openings when we started them in a precise manner. By studying it so closely we were able to analyse the opening down to shot by shot allowing us to recreate the outfits used and the mannerisms.
- We had to complete our tasks in partners, therefore, me and my partner set out to complete all the shots by our deadline which was the 23rd meaning we had a week to do so. We completed all of our shots within the space of two hours but within these two hours we made sure all the timings were right and we were as close to the original as possible, meaning we had to do some shots several times.
- Once our filming was completed we began to edit our shots together and get the correct timing and edited it all to make the shots seem quite smooth and more professional like. Due to being quite familiar to the software now, I found it a lot easier edit and cut all our shots together and to complete similar transitions to the original opening of Juno.
- When we got in the class we were to get in groups of who we would like to work with and the discuss some openings that we would like to create for our final piece. We came up with several ideas with a mixture of ideas one of the them being a horror/thriller where the characters would be being chased by someone through a forest in a state of panic. Another idea we came up with would be to do a montage of a couple and to be quite fast paced and at the end have '18 months ago...' however, we felt this would be quite typical of a romance so we also followed the route of a tragedy. By doing this we felt that it would make us stand out however out main issue when creating this was showing that time has passed throughout their relationship however the use of lighting and indoor buildings we would be able to create some scenes which may look as if they're in summer. We thought of some settings which we could possibly use such as woodland, cafés, within 'their' home etc. if we were to film in a public place we would have to gain permission from the owners to make sure everything was all well and good. After we thought of some possible settings we then thought of some shots and ideas and thought which of the members of our class or people we knew would fit the role and be willing to give up their time to part take in our opening.
- We researched similar openings within the genre of 'romance' which we decided on following with our own final piece when creating our opening. We followed the genre of 'romance' as we felt that this was the best idea that we had, it was also an idea that was most diverse from the rest of the class and possibly others who are completing AS Media. By researching other openings within the genre of 'romance' it allows us to gain some conventions within a romantic openings or some hints to show that it part takes in the romantic genre.
Thursday 7th November
- Due to the marking of our blogs, we focused on them and the feedback in which my teacher had given us, by doing this it will help us gain a higher mark and help with future pieces of work of a similar format. There were a few things which needed to be added to my work so I started with the idea of my film poster and the feedback I received there which was to discuss the format and layout of the images in which I did to hopefully gain a higher mark overall.
Monday 11th November - Tuesday 12th November
- Before going into our filming and storyboard we decided to create mood boards to show the genre of our opening and it allowed us to gain some ideas for our personal pieces. We began by searching generic words related with 'romance' such as couples, love etc. from the pictures of the couples it gave us ideas to recreate the images or similar ideas, this helped better our opening and make it seem more realistic. We also researched some romantic ideas, this was done through searching some ideas for dates when in a relationship, which gave us some setting ideas also.
- We began planning some shots and looking at local areas in which we could use for our settings or looking into ideas in which we may be able to recreate ourselves. By doing this is allowed my group to see what ideas we could bring to reality and ideas in which we may not be able to use as they're too ambitious for a real life feel.
- We also began to sort our a planning schedule of when we could all film and came up with some editing ideas on how to make it all flow well and seem as if it was a romantic opening and movie in general. Our teacher gave us the idea to use very soft lighting, involving reds and golds which would give it the romantic feel and my group would try to recreate as best as we could when filming.
Wednesday 20th November
- We went to a trip at BFI (British Film Institution) in London and throughout the day we would be discussing film openings, allowing us to gain ideas from those who are experienced. We mostly looked at the idea of titles and their placement on screen within the opening and how some titles could be incorportated into the openings which may possibly gain us a higher marks. From the opening of Napoleon Dynamite, directed by Jared Hess, where its mostly shown through the theme of food or identification of Napoleon Dynamite. My group and I felt that this would be a good idea for our personal openings and noted down some ideas on where the placement of the titles could possibly go. Throughout a short period of the day, we looked at past pieces of work from those who have compelted AS Media, by doing this it allowed us to see the grade boundaries in which some pieces achieved and what we needed to do in order for ours to reach the top grades possible.

Thursday 5th December
We hadn't finished all of our filming so we decided that we would get the rest of our shots filmed for the rest of the day and we completed this and took more than enough shots for us to choose from. We filmed a scene where the couple appears to be having a picnic and where they're appear on meeting each other and he brings her a box of chocolates.
Monday 9th December - Tuesday 7th Jan
Throughout this time period we have been editing our final piece. We began with putting our shots into groups and deciding on which one we should use and then cutting them down to their correct length, in order to begin getting the timings down. We carried this out for all the shots until we were finished and due to my group and I not having much experience in the editing software, we decided to play around with the effects and all the editing tools in order to make sure that our final piece would be up to a high standard. We all watched individually and began to point out things we thought that we should improve and things we could possibly add in to make it seem more professional.
